Pulau Semakau Public Walk on 11th June
Thursday, June 11, 2009 / 2:36 PM

Again,I headed to Pulau Semakau, this time with small kids, their parents and girls from Paya Lebar Methodist Girl's school(I did not have the pleasure of being the assistant guide for their group).

MOVING ON!After a rather slow and boring boat ride from Marina South Pier at 5am in the morning,we reached the jetty which everyone mentioned in the About section of our blog will know by now(breaking the fourth wall). What strikes me as incredible is the sunrise(but my camera was wouldn't start up,so I had to walk to the intertidal area without snapping pictures,WHY OF ALL TIMES MUST THIS ERROR HAPPEN!!!).

After another rather generous blood donation I gave to the mosquitoes,I followed July's group to meet our FIRST animal of the day.

We saw this little critter moving around. All the little runts think this is a stingray! But it's not,for it is a Coastal Horseshoe crab(my first time seeing any of these in Pulau Semakau).Another message to all the other little runts out there, the tail IS NOT VENOMOUS!It is just used to try and flip the horseshoe crab should it be upside down.Remember,it's been here for about 400 million years,so you're looking at a living fossil.Even dinosaurs didn't survive that fireball I sent.
(Mistake:This is a mangrove horseshoe crab! The tail is not jagged.Thx LK for correcting this)

Lookie here.A dragonfish sea cucumber and a juvenile Cushion star!Again, the sea cucumber is NOT the one we eat during chinese new year.If you do eat this, make sure you reserve a place in Choa Chu Kang. You'll be staying there...FOREVER!

I can't believe we saw this many common sea stars!I had to look at the ground all the time just to avoid stepping on these stars that do not shine in the sky.(on the path to the coral area,we saw at least 26,that's actually alot for an inter-tidal area).

Jinyi's favourite sea star. It's a knobbly sea star!Really,I wish we would start seeing more than just one each trip.

As the co-admin of this blog,it brings me great honor to give you a picture of the backside of the Knobbly sea star. You're all welcome,by the way.

It's a giant clam!In the larval stage after external fertilization, the puny little larval swims in the ocean till it finds a proper substrate to anchor itself unto, and then stays at that spot for the rest of its life, thats why you can always find the clam at the same place.Poor clam...it stays there forerver.

After hearing the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls group scream(yes, they have the uncanny ability to scream at everything, even water),we went to see what the commotion is about and we saw that it is a rather aggresive flower crab.We figured it was a male(I tried to touch it,it nearly pinched me)by the shape of the abdomen.Guess what, this aggresive male was snapping at us while we snap photos at him.Man,he's furious!

After that,it was time to wash up.By the way,the guide is July and he's on the very right of this photo(The dude wearing glasses).Yes,Jin Yi,he's the guy who you followed on our last hunting seeking session.

Okays, I forgotten the date where we slept overnight.
Apologies yeahs? Anyways, we slept in quite early. So yepx Let start it off rolling !

Alrightxz, here we started off walking through the muddy and swampy area. We can see too, Yuanfeng's back. The one in bright blue Tee. Hahahs. Okays, so we started to inch our way further deep in....

And here, we spotted a sea star! Hahahs. The first creature we spotted.

Another picture of it again. As you can see, the sea star likes to stay in muddy areas. Hahs.
Another longer sea star :DD
We also spotted many other organisms, but for now, lets have some leisure pictures . Hahas.
So, below, right now, this is where all of us were waiting for people to arrive, and also for the boat to start its engine :D All of us are camera shy, except for some ! Here again, the super PHOTOGENIC ppl in this picture are remus and Daniel Lim. HAHAHAHS :DD

After de-brief, Daniel,Alex and Remus went cycling around. And here is a pic of Remus on a bike. It's his second time cycling(he just learned how to 2 days before)

okays, so this is the second half of what we spotted there ! I have to seriously say, some of them I dont really know their names, so if you do know, edit this post please. Thks !

See that? two Sea stars overlapping each other ! Hahahas.

Cool right? Hahahas. (From Remus:Nat,did you purposely put them over there to take a nice photo or is this natural?haha)

Finally, let me introduce to you this: Jinyi's fave. It's a knobbly sea star! Hahahas. She loves sea stars, evr since she spotted one when we were sec 2(see the post below for the photo when we were sec 2). So yepx, here goes for you, Jin yi !

This is a carpet anemone, probably an adult.

Pulau Semakau Public Walk on 1st June
/ 9:43 PM

On the boat trip back to Mainland Singapore,31st May after our rather disastrous trip to Pulau Semakau,Luan Keng, one of our coordinaters asked me(Remus Koh)if I want to join them for a Public Walk on 1st June.Since I pretty much had nothing else to do(and I wanted to skip Wushu training),I went.
I arrived at 7.30pm in the morning(and I fell asleep at Marina South Pier)and after deciding if I want to do hunting seeking or follow a group,I went to follow a guide who guided me,Jin Yi and Natalya in Pulau Semakau last year:Siyang.Well, after I got into the group,I kinda asked if I can be an assistant guide for the group, and well, the rest is history.(Btw,the group I got into was Upside-down jellyfish, which is different from the group last year,Hermit Crabs).

Blah blah blah,I shall skip to the intertidal walk.
This are oysters. They all gather here to dry up and die(only kidding). There ARE some anemone in here, but they are all shriveled up so you can't see them. The picture is not clear, dunno why.

We saw our first MOVING creature,a mangrove horseshoe crab.
These little critters have been here for 400 million years and they survived the fireball I summoned to Earth at 400,000,000 BC.
Moving on,we saw this rather nice animal.Anyone who can guess what it is gets a cookie.(Hint:This is ______bob Squarepants)
This is a carpet anemone. Please don't use it as your carpets.Apparently,Nemo isn't in there,so we decided to touch it.Mind,if you touch it,the tentacles will stick to you.Really.This is because it is shooting venomous spines at you.Since we humans are much more thick skinned than our distant relatives, the sea dwellers,we feel a sticky feeling rather than a fiery sensation.
No,it's not Patrick Star.Patrick is pink. This is his species,a sea star, better known by a name thought up by the younger generations as a starfish.Guess what.Their "brain" is their skin!I guess that's why Patrick is smarter than all you people.
This is a find made by me(it's my first find in the role of an assistant guide). It's a dog whelk with an anemone hitching a ride behind it's back.FREELOADER!
This is a picture of our guide and some of the group members.Yes,he is Siyang.
This was the group photo of the traditional knobbly sea star last year.Yes,we were all Sec 2 during that good time.I was next to Tze Hsien(next to Natalya, green PE Shirt).
This is a hairy crab. It's known for clinging onto rocks with those sharp legs of theirs.Don't eat it,it's poisonous.(Common mistakes about poisonous and venomous.Poisonous is when you eat it and die.Venomous is when it bites you and you die).

This is a picture of knobbly sea stars and cushion stars.I stepped on a moon snail, hoped he survived :(.
It's a flatworm! One of the beautiful coloured worms nature created. It's actually flat, hence it's name and this worm is about the size of my pinkie finger,5 times smaller.

We saw a sea cumumber, but I didn't take a picture because my camera batt. is running low. Then I remembered I still had my handphone(D'OH!).

On the 31st of May,it was one of the guides,(July's) birthday. He celebrated it on 1st of June.So I took a picture of the birthday cake.(The cake is a lie, there is no spoon.)

All in all,it was a great day.Although, the journey back was not so great because I hit my shin bone on the metal stairs at the boat.
